"Where there is free flow, there is no pain. Where there is pain, there is no free flow." — Huangdi Neijing
The headache hits and you already know what the next few hours look like. The lights are too bright. The sound is too loud. You cancel what you had planned, find the darkest room you can, and wait it out — again.
Maybe you've tried medication, but it only does so much, or you don't love relying on it. Maybe your headaches keep coming back no matter what you do. Maybe they're getting worse, or more frequent, and nobody has been able to tell you why.
You're not imagining it. And it's not something you just have to live with.
Headaches and migraines are one of the most common conditions I treat at my NW Calgary clinic — and one of the most rewarding. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine don't just dull the pain. They work to find and address what's actually driving it, so that attacks become less frequent, less severe, and over time, less defining of your day-to-day life.
Serving Capitol Hill, Mount Pleasant, Briar Hill, West Hillhurst, Banff Trail, Colingwood, Rosemont, Hillhurst/Kensington, St. Andrews Heights, and surrounding NW Calgary neighbourhoods.
What TCM Understands About Your Headaches
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, headaches are never just a head problem. The location, quality, and timing of your pain are clues — and they point us toward the deeper imbalance that's generating it.
The Liver is most commonly involved. When Liver Qi stagnates — from chronic stress, emotional strain, poor sleep, or irregular eating — it rises upward and disrupts the smooth flow of Qi and Blood to the head. The result is throbbing, one-sided pain, light and sound sensitivity, and migraines that reliably worsen with stress or hormonal shifts. This is the pattern behind many classic migraines.
The Stomach and Gallbladder channels run directly over the forehead and temples. When these channels are congested or overactive, frontal and temporal headaches appear — often with nausea, eye tension, or a tight band of pressure across the face.
Blood and Yin deficiency tend to drive the duller, more chronic headaches — the ones that are always there in the background, that get worse when you're tired, depleted, or run down. These are common in people who are also dealing with burnout, hormonal imbalance, or long-term stress.
Acupuncture works by moving stagnation, nourishing what's depleted, and restoring smooth flow through the channels — calming the triggers that fire during an attack and building resilience between episodes so attacks become fewer and further between.
Treatment may involve:
Acupuncture to clear channel blockages, calm Liver Yang rising, and nourish Blood and Yin
Cupping or Gua Sha to release the neck, shoulder, and upper back tension that feeds recurring headache patterns
Moxibustion to address cold-type or deficiency-driven headaches
Lifestyle and dietary guidance to identify and reduce common TCM headache triggers
Acupuncture for Headaches & Migraines in Calgary – Frequently Asked Questions
Can acupuncture actually help with migraines?
Yes. There is a growing body of research supporting acupuncture as an effective treatment for migraine prevention and management. In practice, many patients experience meaningful reductions in both frequency and intensity — often when other treatments have offered limited relief. Acupuncture works best when we understand the pattern driving your migraines, which is why the initial assessment is so important.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how long you've been dealing with headaches and how established the pattern is. Acute or recent-onset headaches often respond quickly — within a few sessions. Chronic migraines that have been present for years typically require more consistent treatment over several weeks before significant improvement holds. Most patients notice a shift within the first three to five sessions.
Can acupuncture help if I'm already taking migraine medication?
Yes. Acupuncture works well alongside medication and does not interfere with pharmaceutical treatments. Many patients find that as their headache frequency decreases through treatment, their reliance on medication naturally decreases as well. Any changes to your medication should always be guided by your prescribing doctor.
What's the difference between treating migraines and tension headaches?
In TCM, the approach differs based on the underlying pattern — not just the headache type. A tension headache driven by stress and Liver Qi stagnation is treated differently than one driven by deficiency or cold. This is why a thorough assessment matters. Two people with "tension headaches" may have completely different root causes and require different treatments.
Are hormonal and menstrual migraines treatable with acupuncture?
Yes — and these tend to respond very well. Hormonal migraines in TCM are closely linked to Liver Blood deficiency and Liver Qi stagnation, both of which acupuncture directly addresses. Treating the underlying hormonal and energetic imbalance often reduces or eliminates the cyclical pattern over time.
Can acupuncture help with medication overuse headache (rebound headache)?
Yes. Rebound headaches are a frustrating cycle — pain medication provides temporary relief but triggers more headaches with overuse. Acupuncture can help break this cycle by addressing the underlying pain pattern naturally, reducing the need for medication, and supporting the nervous system through the process.
Do acupuncture needles hurt?
Most people are surprised by how gentle treatment is. Acupuncture needles are very fine — nothing like a hypodermic needle — and insertion is typically felt as a brief, mild sensation or nothing at all. Many patients find treatment deeply relaxing and fall asleep on the table.
