Acupuncture for Children in Calgary, AB

“Balance a child’s body early, and the roots of health grow deep.”

You love your child, but their disrupted sleep, constant sniffles, and ongoing tummy troubles are wearing on the whole family. You've tried your best to support them, but nothing seems to fully settle their system.

Childhood is a time of rapid growth and change. Children are naturally abundant in Yang and relatively Yin deficient, which means their systems are active, developing, and not yet fully settled. Because of this, periods of imbalance are a normal part of growing up — especially as they move through developmental milestones.

These early patterns are not random. When left unaddressed, temporary imbalances can sometimes take root, carrying forward into adulthood as more complex challenges with sleep, digestion, immunity, or emotional regulation. The goal is not to fix every issue, but to guide the body through these stages of development, helping children's systems settle and adapt naturally.

Dr. Joseph Coccagna practices at The Natural Health Collective, 1607 20 Ave NW, in Capitol Hill, NW Calgary — serving families across Capitol Hill, Mount Pleasant, Briar Hill, West Hillhurst, Banff Trail, Collingwood, Rosemont, Hillhurst/Kensington, St. Andrews Heights, and surrounding NW Calgary communities.

Why TCM Works Well for Children

Children's Qi responds quickly to treatment — shorter needle retention times, gentle stimulation, and even non-needle techniques produce meaningful results because children's systems are highly responsive and still developing. Many issues are rooted in immature digestion and immunity, which acupuncture and Tui Na can strengthen directly. Treatment avoids the overuse of antibiotics and steroids in recurrent or chronic conditions by addressing the underlying pattern rather than suppressing symptoms.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, children are not treated as small adults. Their constitutions are understood as pure but immature — full of vitality and growth potential, but not yet fully consolidated. This means small interventions can have significant effects. Two children with the same presenting complaint may receive completely different treatments because their underlying patterns are different.

What to Expect

Your child's first visit is designed to be gentle, calm, and reassuring for both of you. The first appointment is 90 minutes and begins with a thorough intake — your child's health history, current concerns, diet, sleep, temperament, digestion, and any relevant family context. Parents are present throughout and play an active role.

Treatment is adapted entirely to your child's age, temperament, and comfort level. For infants and toddlers this typically means shonishin tools, acupressure, or Tui Na rather than needles. Older children usually tolerate fine needles very well — many are surprised by how little they feel, and many fall asleep during treatment.

Sessions are calm, unhurried, and designed to feel safe for your child. Parents are welcome in the room, and children are encouraged to bring a favourite toy, book, or comfort item.

FAQ: Acupuncture for Children in Calgary

Is pediatric acupuncture safe for babies, toddlers, and children?
Yes. Pediatric acupuncture is safe for children of all ages including newborns when performed by a trained practitioner. Treatments are gentle and adapted to your child's age and comfort level. For infants and toddlers this often means minimal or no needles, using techniques like acupressure or shonishin. See
Is Acupuncture Safe for Children? A Calgary Parent's Guide for a detailed answer.

My child is afraid of needles. Can they still be treated?
Yes — treatment can be performed entirely without needles using shonishin tools and acupressure. These techniques are effective for young children and needle-sensitive patients of any age.

At what age can children start acupuncture?
There is no minimum age. Newborns can be treated safely using shonishin and acupressure techniques. Early intervention is often the most effective — children's systems are highly responsive and conditions that might become chronic in adults often resolve quickly when addressed early.

How many sessions will my child need?
Children tend to respond faster than adults. Acute conditions often improve within 2–4 sessions. Chronic or recurrent patterns may take longer but typically show meaningful progress within the first few treatments. An honest timeline will be discussed at your first appointment.

Does acupuncture hurt children?
Most children experience pediatric acupuncture as gentle and calming. When needles are used they are extremely fine and inserted quickly, often with little to no discomfort. Many treatments for young children are needle-free.

Do I need a referral from my child's doctor?
No referral is needed. You can book directly. Dr. Coccagna is happy to work collaboratively alongside your child's existing care providers.

Is pediatric acupuncture covered by insurance in Alberta?
If your extended health benefits cover acupuncture, coverage typically extends to all family members including children. Read the
